Suitable maintenance and care for bonsaiJulio P. Yap Jr.For an expert and award-winning enthusiast like the experienced architect Michael Peña, the most critical part of cultivating bonsai is the maintenance and care of the plant. It says that apart from the careful irrigation and repotting, proper fertilization is another something important to consider. Since bonsai trees are planted in small containers, with limited space and nutrients available, regularly fertilizing during the tree growth season is very vital to keep it healthy. The architect Michael Peña along with his award-winning bantigue. However, it will depend on the species of the tree – when, how much and how often it should be fertilized. For beginners, the bonsai, which means plattering in Japanese, is the art of nourishing a dwarf tree or shrub in a small but proportional container, where the branches are exactly rotten and wiring to achieve a sculpted effect. Peña says that a bonsai tree should be patiently watered and fertilized, and nourished with love because it has been cultivating one for years. Locally, most enthusiasts prefer the bantigue (Pemphis acidula) that can support the effect of the typhoons and the abrasive heat of the Philippine climate. In 2010, one of the Peña Bantigue collections, which is in a vertical style, won the top prize in a competition that was organized by the then newly formed Bonsai and Suiseki Alliance of the Philippines. This style imitates the work of nature where trees try to twist or get away from the wind and bend towards the sun. Peña says that the proper cultivation and care of bonsai requires techniques and tools that focus on supporting the long-term growth and maintenance of trees in small containers. Although ideas about the use of fertilizers and fertilization techniques can vary between the enthusiasts bonsai, Peña was able to adapt his own style. One of the rare bonsai collections of Peña. For some, they promote the use of organic fertilizers to increase a mixture of essentially inorganic soil, while others use chemical fertilizers. According to Peña, he uses Amino Plus Foliar Fertilizer (APFF) to make his bonsai collection healthy. He said that the long-term maintenance of a tree in a container will require specialized care techniques, which is one of the reasons why he prefers to use APFF. But it says that the composition and fertilization of the soil should focus on the needs of each bonsai tree. Apart from fertilization, Peña says that the irrigation of a bonsai tree is the most important one, saying that it should be done regularly, and must be related to the requirement of the species for dry, wet or humid soil. But since the bench is commonly found in the coastal areas, it occasionally needs salt spray for proper growth and development. For Peña, it uses a small amount of "bagoong" to complement the nutritional requirement of a bonsai bench, apart from of course, of the regular application of APFF. He says that after using APFF for some time already, his bonsai collection became healthier, and the leaves of his bonsai trees became more vibrant in color – becoming dark green, which he said is a sign of a healthy tree. For its part, Ricky Sun of Global Green Organic Fertilizer, Inc., the producer of APFF, attributed the improvement to the amino acid. It says that the cuts and fish residues, particularly the type of mackerel, are fermented to produce the organic foliar fertilizer. The mackerels are rich in Omega 3, which is good for the health of plants, as well as animals, he adds. A dwarf kamuning tree welcomes visitors to Peña's house. The sun continues that unlike other fertilizers derived from fish and other natural sources, APFF is not processed at high temperature, thus avoiding the denaturalization of proteins and preserves amino acids, enzymes, vitamins and natural oil. Bonsai trees sprayed with APFF can become more resistant to diseases and other tensions. When sprayed, it effectively attaches to the surface of the plant and provides a quick supplementation. Among the species of bonsai trees that Peña cultivates include Bantigue, Agoho and, Kamuning, among many others. Peña says that some species are more popular as bonsai material because they have unique features, such as small leaves or needles, which make them appropriate for the compact visual reach of bonsai. For the style, Peña shares that the most common thing is the formal vertical, the informal vertical, the inclination, semi-cascada, cascade, balsa, literati and group/forest. Other rare styles include windswept, weeping, split-trunk, and drift wood. These styles are not usually exclusive, and a single bonsai specimen can display more than one style feature.
